Grim Fandango and Windows 7

Hi Internet. I recently found that my formerly working Grim Fandango was crashing

The facts:

  1. I have Grim Fandango installed using the Grim Fandango Setup that moves the disc files to hard drive
  2. This setup also installs Grim Fandango Launcher
  3. Grim Fandango was working correctly months ago, and then I find it is no longer working. It crashes when I attempt to play the game fullscreen.

Symptoms:

Using “Play Fullscreen” causes Grim Fandango to attempt to resize the screen a few times and then crashes/closes silently.

Windows Event Viewer shows the following error in the Application logs

Faulting application name: GRIMFANDANGO.EXE, version: 1.0.0.1, time stamp: 0x36770ac2
Faulting module name: GRIMFANDANGO.EXE, version: 1.0.0.1, time stamp: 0x36770ac2
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000781e7
Faulting process id: 0xddc
Faulting application start time: 0x01ce4cb4a0251abf
Faulting application path: C:\Games\Grim\GRIMFANDANGO.EXE
Faulting module path: C:\Games\Grim\GRIMFANDANGO.EXE

Steps I took to resolve the issue. Not all of these may be required:

  1. Disabled LogMeIn Mirror Driver in the Device Manager (if you use LogMeIn)
  2. Uninstalled Virtual Clone Drive from Slysoft via Programs and Features [I really think this was the culprit, as the internet suggests this error is caused by Cyberlink PowerDVD software as well]. Daemon Tools Lite is currently in use now without issue.
  3. Re-installed NVIDIA drivers via nvidia.com taking care to checkbox “Clean installation” during the custom setup
  4. Reboot PC

Update:

Although this solution worked to get Grim Fandango working initially, once I reached Year 4 (in the storyline) the game crashed after the Year 4 movie with the same exception code. This crash occurs immediately after Glottis falls backwards. I worked around this issue by using the debug keys and commands to warp to the first room of Year 4. (Debug commands are described by the “Grim Fandango Launcher”.)  The game worked again until I attempted to take Chowchilla Charlie’s clothes, deep into Year 4. I believe the game crashed right after exiting the restroom, or within that minute. I also noticed that the “0xc0000005 crash” occurs if you attempt to load any saved game that is made in Year 4, but any save game from any previous year loads perfectly fine. I am getting the impression that this bug has more to do with the game than my PC. I’ve also migrated the game and saves to a different PC and was able to replicate every behavior I’ve described. It seems to be largely PC independant, although both PCs are running Windows 7.

Good luck for now. If I keep playing I think I’m going to have to warp around with the debug commands again.
