Put some raw eggs into your post-workout shake.
A few words about shakes
First, a cautionary note. Shakes aren’t always ideal for achieving your body composition goals. Blending up food–any food–into liquid calories is a recipe for a sharp insulin spike. For those who have issues with nutrient partitioning going to the wrong place, this can be a real issue, and you should avoid shakes and instead eat meals very, very slowly. For those who have no issues funneling nutrients primarily into their muscles, blend on.
Raw egg blending guidelines:
- Raw eggs can easily go into any shake that would resemble ice cream. That’s because eggs are an ingredient in ice cream. Once you have this concept down, you can “eggs-trapolate” when you can comfortable add 4 eggs to your shake rather than 2, and so on. (Eggs-trapolate. Hahaha. *wipes tear*) I find that some banana, coconut oil, coconut milk, and cinnamon, can easily carry 2-4 eggs if not more.
- Your chances of being exposed to salmonella via eggs is about 1 in 20,000. This statistic may only pertain to cooked eggs, however. Your age, health, stomach acid, and immune system are all factors in how you might deal with salmonella should you encounter a contaminated egg.
- Wash the shells of your “destination: raw” eggs. Even though you eat what is on the inside, the egg is likely to make some contact with a cracked shell where salmonella could be living. Ideally that shell would be scrubbed with soap and water. Take a few careful moments to potentially prevent week-long agony.
- Be picky about the egg quality and integrity. When you aren’t cooking the egg, the integrity of the shell and constant refrigeration become extremely important. Also, use your nose. Crack eggs into a separate bowl (or alone) so you can examine them carefully before you add them to your other ingredients.
- Raw egg whites have molecules capable of binding to biotin, a necessary nutrient. (Did Rocky have a biotin deficiency??) If you are going to consume a large amount of raw eggs on a regular basis, you might consider using more yolks than whites, using yolks and cooking the whites, or (in theory) supplementing with biotin hours away from the consumption of raw egg whites.
