I finished reading Grain Brain a few weeks ago. I highly recommend it as an introductory book for anyone with a family member suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia. That being said, if you already have significant experience with functional medicine you’ll appreciate the conciseness of the book as an introductory resource for others, but you aren’t going to learn much more yourself.
There were a few good tidbits. For example, exercise alone without dietary changes apparently has no significant impact on insulin sensitivity. There’s also a whole chapter opposed to statin drugs–again, very concise and to the point. Let’s see… Also, walking is better for increasing the size of the hippocampus than doing puzzles. Good to know. Lastly, there’s a quick reference section for important blood tests you can perform. It’s a medium-comprehensive list. Again, concise and a good introductory resource for someone who is not steeped in medicine research.
Hats off to Dr. Perlmutter. Good book.
